This is a LARGE LEROY NEIMAN CAL RIPKEN “2131” SERIGRAPH ARTIST PROOF, CUSTOM FRAME & COA. This is definitely a departure from our regular array of numismatic material offered. This is a rare and desirable Leroy Neiman serigraph of the legendary Ironman of Baseball, Cal Ripken. As most baseball fans are only too aware, the iconic Ripken set one of the few major league baseball records that may never be eclipsed-playing in 2,131 consecutive games, spanning 14 seasons. Leroy Neiman, one of the quintessential abstract portrait artists of the 20th century, was commissioned to paint this likeness of Ripken in 2000, with the intention of producing a very limited number of prints, and an even smaller number of serigraph artist proofs. Other Neiman similar sized/themed serigraphs have sold for $20,000 and up; Our customer originally purchased this one, 20 years ago, for $10,000. Given the healthy state of the art market, combined with the fact that Neiman is now deceased, this piece could be considerably more valuable today. Measuring a whopping 39″ x 47″ (outside frame dimensions) and triple-matted in a blue lacquer frame, this artwork is a real eye popper. Master plates/screens were used to produce this work, meaning that from the artist’s painting, hand-drawn positives are produced from each color by master printer. This is a terribly time and work intensive procedure, yielding the magnificent finished product pictured above. The finished product was dual signed by both Neiman and Cal Ripken. This is #2 of a mere 74 produced. Quite a bit of documentation and 2 COAs are included with the serigraph.
