Description
This is a BEAUTIFUL VICTORIAN-PERIOD 14 KT GOLD & CARVED RED CORAL “WINE GODDESS” BROOCH. TRUE PERIOD RED CORAL IS NOT ONLY ELUSIVE, BUT ALSO EXPERIENCING A RENAISSANCE IN THE JEWELRY WORLD. WE ESTIMATE THIS PIECE TO BE FROM THE LATER 19TH CENTURY. MEASURING 1 5/8″ x 1 1/4″, IT FEATURES A FRONT-FACING YOUNG LADY’S PORTRAIT WITH GRAPES (IN LIEU OF HAIR) FLOWING DOWN BOTH SIDES OF HER FACE. THE WINE THEME IS CONTINUED WITH THE SCROLLED 14KT GRAPE LEAVES THAT SECURE THE CORAL CENTERPIECE. THERE IS NO STRIATING OR OTHER TYPE OF IMPERFECTIONS ON THE FRONT OF THE BROOCH, HOWEVER THERE IS WHITE-STRIPED EFFECT ON THE REVERSE SIDE. ALSO, THE INITIALS L.A. WERE CARVED IN THE BACK OF THE CORAL, NO DOUBT IDENTIFYING A PREVIOUS OWNER. THERE IS ALSO A HOOP GIVING THE OPTION OF BEING WORN AS A PENDANT. RED CORAL BROOCHES IN THIS SIZE WITH THIS QUALITY OF CARVING ARE VERY SCARCE. IN OUR 34 YEARS IN THE FULLTIME RARE COIN & COLLECTIBLES BUSINESS, THIS IS THE FIRST THAT WE CAN RECALL EVER OWNING OR OFFERING!
