This is a 1916-S $20 ST GAUDENS GOLD DOUBLE EAGLE – PCGS MS-66, #39322945. The 1916-S was the only Saint minted in 1916, with no coins produced at either Philadelphia or Denver. Collectors desiring to complete a date set of $20 Saints must have this date for completion. This factor always keeps price pressure on this date, not found on the 1909 through 1915 San Francisco dates. In addition, this date becomes prohibitively scarce in grades above MS-65. This MS-66 example is in the condition census. A mere 7 pieces are graded higher, all MS-66+….the last of which sold for $108,000 in 2023. There are no coins graded MS-67 at PCGS. The present coin combines nice glowing luster with unusually clean surfaces, a combination seldom found on this date. Don’t snooze on this one as it may be a while before you see another!
