Description
This is a 1910-D $20 ST GAUDENS GOLD DOUBLE EAGLE – PCGS MS-66, #36073466. Although not rare as a date, above the grade of MS-65, the 1910-D becomes very elusive. Although the date typically comes with beautiful luster (certainly the case here), surface preservation can be its nemesis. Above the grade of MS-66, PCGS has graded a scant 16 coins. David Akers recognized the scarcity of this date in GEM grades years ago, and his comments still apply today: The 1910-D is one of the scarcest of the early mintmarked Saint-Gaudens $20 issues, although it cannot be called rare by any means. Below full MS-65, it can be found with little or no difficulty and in gem condition it is very scarce but certainly not rare. My notes indicate I have seen two examples that I called “Superb MS-67” at the time but whether or not they would grade that high by today’s standards I am not sure. Suffice to say that a superb 1910-D is a major rarity. Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices. This piece is no exception. Please note, the coin and collectibles markets do fluctuate, and prices occasionally will change. In this rare circumstance, we will contact you first to verify your order.
