Description
This is a 1900 $10,000 GOLD CERTIFICATE, FR#1225g – PMG 25 VERY FINE, CANCELLED, INTERNAL TEAR, RARE! An attractive example of this popular note with an amazing backstory. The 300-400 known notes of this type are all cancelled. In this case, the reverse is endorsed and the punch cancels read PAID. These high denomination notes were used exclusive for Bank and U.S. Treasury transactions. Because they were all redeemed, they had no monetary value. The redeemed certificates were stored at the Old Post Office in Washington DC, which suffered a major fire on December 13, 1935. A box containing 300-400 notes ended up in the street, and excited bystanders began picking the notes up. Originally thinking they were rich, they were disappointed to learn that the 10,000 Gold Certificates were cancelled, redeemed and had no face value. However, because of this event, a few hundred of these rare notes survive today for collectors.
The present note, graded VF-25, faces up nicely and has an unoffensive punch cancellation. PMG noted an “internal tear” which is just some minor splits between the cancellation holes. Most of the surviving 1900 $10,000s are FR#1225H, with the Teehee/Burke signature combination. This one, FR#1225G, has the Parker/Burke signature combination, and is much rarer, 1 of about 15 known. As an added bonus, PMG noted the Radar Serial Number 17871. A really neat note for a multitude of reasons! Don’t miss out!
