Description
This is a 1896 PATTERN, 5c, J-1771, NICKEL, POPULAR & DESIRABLE LATER PATTERN, PCGS PR-63! BY 1896, PATTERN COINAGE WAS WINDING DOWN. COLLECTOR DEMAND HAD BECOME ALL BUT NON-EXISTENT FOR THESE COINS, AND CONGRESS DID NOT CONSIDER IT NECESSARY TO CONTINUE STRIKING THEM ON A REGULAR BASIS. THIS IS ONE OF THE MORE INTERESTING PATTERNS, AS IT WAS PROPOSED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LIBERTY NICKEL’S LIFESPAN. FURTHERMORE, IT RESEMBLED THE SHIELD NICKEL WHICH HAD BEEN REPLACED 13 YEARS EARLIER. IT WAS ALMOST AS IF IT WAS A COIN WITHOUT A PURPOSE. CURIOUSLY, THE DESIGN WAS ALSO USED TO COIN A FEW 1 CENT PATTERNS, WHICH ARE ALL EXTREMELY RARE TODAY. J-1771 HAS ALWAYS BEEN CONSIDERED SCARCE; ORIGINALLY CATALOGED AS AN R-6 BY JUDD, IT IS STILL CONSIDERED AN R-6. THIS DESIGN HAS BEEN A FAVORITE OF MODERN-ERA PATTERN COLLECTORS, AND FOR THE AFOREMENTIONED REASONS, REMAINS VERY POPULAR TODAY! Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices. This piece is no exception. Please note, the coin and collectibles markets do fluctuate, and prices occasionally will change. In this rare circumstance, we will contact you first to verify your order.
