Description
This is a 1865 $3 GOLD PRINCESS – PCGS AU-58 CAC, ORIGINAL & PQ ULTRA RARE CIVIL WAR DATE!. A true rarity! With an original mintage of just 1,140 pieces, this late Civil War issue has the lowest mintage of any $3 prior to 1881. And unlike the 1880s dated $3s, which were produced primarily for collectors and saved in some amount, the 1865 $3 was clearly produced for general commerce. The proof of that is that the average 1865 $3, when located, is heavily circulated. In terms of number of coins certified, only the 1877 and 1873 Closed 3 are rarer, and the numbers are close. PCGS shows just 16 coins on the population report in AU-58, and a number of these are likely resubmissions of the same coin in hopes of a coveted Mint State designation. Only 5 CAC coins exist at the grade with only 4 coins finer. PCGS estimates only about 20 total Mint State examples to exist, and most are likely MS-61 pieces that would not present as nicer than our current coin.
As for the current coin, this example is extremely well-struck, with semi-reflective surfaces radiating medium to deep orange gold. The surfaces show not major marks or distractions, and show virtually no perceptible wear on the high points. Considering David Akers claims that most of these are overgraded at the services, to find a lovely, 100% original example that is accurately or even conservatively graded is a true find! And, considering that an AU-58 has not traded in a major coin auction in over 10 years, this represents a unique opportunity! Don’t miss this one! Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices. This piece is no exception. Please note, the coin and collectibles markets do fluctuate, and prices occasionally will change. In this rare circumstance, we will contact you first to verify your order.
