This is a 1853 PATTERN 1c, J-151, COPPER-NICKEL, $2.50 LIBERTY OBVERSE, R-6, NGC PF-63. THIS IS THE PRECURSOR TO THE SMALL CENT WHICH WASN’T ADOPTED FOR ANOTHER 3 YEARS. IT FEATURED THE ADOPTED $2.50 LIBERTY DESIGN WHICH WAS BEING USED AT THE TIME. NOW BELIEVED TO BE A HIGH R-6, AT ONE TIME THIS PATTERN WAS CONSIDERED AN R-7.
