Description
This is a 1838-D $5 CLASSIC HEAD GOLD HALF EAGLE PCGS XF-45 WELL STRUCK & TOUGH! DAHLONEGA. A very tough, high grade example of a first-year Dahlonega, Georgia mint Half Eagle. In fact, this is the ONLY Dahlonega Half Eagle, and the only Dahlonega issue with the mint-mark on the obverse of the coin. From a scant mintage of just 20,583 pieces, only about 275 total examples are believed to survive today. And many of them are either cleaned, damaged, or just low-grade. The present example, conservatively graded XF-45 by PCGS, exhibits medium gold coloration with some deeper orange highlights. The strike is crisp and bold, with exceptionally strong hair details and full details on the reverse eagle. In our opinion, this coin resembles what NGC often grades AU-50 or even 53. Considering how scruffy these often come, this example has appealing surfaces with out any major marks, scratches, rim damage or other objectionable features. A great item to put back as a rare U.S. Gold coin, for a southern mint gold type set, or even to set alongside the similarly rare 1838-C Classic Head. Don’t miss this one!
