Description
This is a 1838 $10 LIBERTY GOLD, NGC AU-58, MINTAGE 7200, NEW TO THE CENSUS-A MAJOR RARITY! THE FIRST LIBERTY HEAD EAGLES APPEARED IN1838 AFTER A HAITUS OF 34 YEARS. THE NEW DESIGN FEATURED A BUST OF LIBERTY FACING LEFT WITH HAIR PULLED BACK TO A BEADED BUN IN THE BACK. THIS DESIGN WAS MODIFIED IN 1839, SO THE 1838 AND 1839/8 ARE THE ONLY EXAMPLES OF THIS SUB-TYPE, AND BOTH REMAIN POPULAR WITH COLLECTORS. THE 1838 $10 IS A RARITY, EMINATING FROM AN ORIGINAL MINTAGE OF JUST 7200 PIECES-MOST SURVIVORS ARE HEAVILY CIRCULATED. KNOWN UNCIRCULATED EXAMPLES NUMBER IN THE SINGLE DIGITS. AKERS NOTES, …”THE 1838 EAGLE HAS LONG BEEN VERY POPULAR AND DESIRABLE. IT IS ALSO RARE IN ALL CONDITIONS AND HIGH-GRADE SPECIMENS ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN. THE TYPICA AVAILABLE 1838 IS ONLY VF-EF AND STRICTLY UNCIRCULATED SPECIMENS ARE EXTREMELY RARE.” THE PRESENT EXAMPLE IS FRESH AND NEW TO THE MARKET. IT HAS NEVER HAD AN AUCTION APPEARANCE. THE COIN HAS A WARM ORANGE-GOLD COLORATION, AND IS WHOLLY ORIGINAL. IT IS ALSO EXTREMELY WELL STRUCK FOR THE ISSUE, WITH MOST OF THE OBVERSE STAR RADIALS EITHER NEAR-COMPLETE OR COMPLETE, AN ANOMALY FOR THIS DATE. LUSTER IS RADIANT AND IS EVIDENT THROUGHOUT THE COIN. IN OUR OPINION, THIS IS ONE OF THE FINER AU-58 EXAMPLES AVAILABLE TO COLLECTORS. NGC SHOWS A POPULATION OF JUST 10 PIECES GRADED AU-58, ONE COIN AT AU-58+ AND A SINGLE MS-62. PCGS SHOWS A RETAIL OF $65,000 AND NGC PRICE GUIDE IS $52,500. GREYSHEET WHOLESALE BID IS $45,000. RARITIES LIKE THIS DO NOT COME OUT OF THE WOODWORK TOO OFTEN. WE HOPE THAT A LUCKY COLLECTOR READING THIS WILL SIEZE THIS OPPORTUNITY! Our commitment is to provide you with quality coins and collectibles at the best possible prices. This piece is no exception. Please note, the coin and collectibles markets do fluctuate, and prices occasionally will change. In this rare circumstance, we will contact you first to verify your order.
