Description
This is a 1796 DRAPED BUST DIME SMALL EAGLE – PCGS VF-35 CAC PQ+ FRESH & ORIGINAL, LUSTER!.
This is simply one of the finest early U.S. Type coins one will find, regardless of the number on the holder.
From an original mintage of 22,135, under 1,000 1796 Dimes are known to exist, with most being heavily circulated and damaged over time. The present example, conservatively graded VF-35 is arguably an XF-40/45 piece with ample traces of mint luster. The 1796 has a CAC population of just 5, and is very tough to find problem free. A very important pre-1800 early Federal issue from the infancy of the United States Mint, and the United States of America in general.
The present example exhibits original golden-grey surfaces with traces of orange coloration at the peripheries. Traces of mint luster can be seen around the stars and retained in the fields. The piece is evenly struck with nice, crisp rims. Unlike most of these early Dimes and Half Dimes, there are very minimal marks, abrasions or distractions, with only some very interesting die cracks on the obverse to note. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!
